Nick Scholten explores the boundaries of the harp in his music, which tries to blur the lines between classical, jazz and other genres. The key question of his quest is: do these boundaries actually exist? Placing a classically oriented instrument in a new musical context produces brand new sound ideas. The pieces of music he writes often have a classical structure and are played in different ensembles. The players are free to interpret their parts and add new notes or improvisations, and the instrumentation is not always fixed either. The goal is to achieve a personal experience of freedom and cross-border expression, independent of a sense of genre.
